[The scene fades in and we find ourselves in VooDoo’s house; all the kids had decided to stay the night at the Tower and VooDoo took full advantage of having no kids for the night. After she cleaned up the house and played with Anicka’s cat, that she somehow got stuck with, she took an hour-long bubble bath; and just pampered herself some. Once she was out of the tub, she settled down on the couch with a sketchbook and began to design her next mermaid outfit. She was halfway done with the tail when a knock came at the door, causing VooDoo to look up; who would be at her door this late? She got up and walked over and opened the door to find one of the members of security standing there, his truck parked and idling in the front drive.]
Sorry to bother you, Ms Wolf, but we have an uninvited guest.
Dear, Lord. [She shook her head; an uninvited guest was the code word for Roger Wright showing up drunk.] Send him in, Mike.
He’s not here.
What? [She turned back around and looked confused for a moment.]
He wouldn’t get in the truck and he’s walking from the airstrip.
Are you fucking kidding me?
Wished I was, Ma’am. Jimmy’s back there walking with him so he doesn’t get lost and freeze to death. He'd be okay if he stays on the heated roads, but he’s drunk and it’s supposed to snow again tonight; so he has a 50/50 chance of making it. We tried to get him in the truck but he threatened to Wright Stuff us.
Oh for fuck’s sake. Let me get my shoes and jacket. [Leaving the door open, she slipped into her tennis shoes that were by the door and grabbed her jacket from the closet.] There goes my nice quiet evening.
Jimmy and I said the same thing.
[She closed the door and followed Mike the guard back to his truck and got in. The fifteen minute drive, Mike told her that they had been notified by the guy working the tower at the airfield that a jet had landed. And that Roger had started walking in the direction of the Tower. When he threatened them, they figured it would be best to come and get her. As the bobbing of Jimmy’s flashlight shown in the distance shining on the form of Roger as he stumbled along the edge of the road. All she could do was shake her head.]
Un-fucking-believable. [She said with a hint of a growl to her voice. VooDoo looked over at Mike and shook her head.] After this, why don’t you and Jimmy go have dinner on me? Just tell whoever to bill it to us like usual.
Will do, Ms. Wolf. [He pulled the truck to a stop a little bit ahead of Roger.]
[VooDoo got out of the truck and waited for Roger to finally make it to her.] Get in the truck, Jimmy. I’ve got this.
Are you sure, Ms Wolf? He’s been making threats and I would hate for him to try something with you.
So would I, Jimmy. [She said with a grave tone to her voice.] So would I. [She looked at Roger as he kept walking. His 3 piece suit was dirty and wet from the multiple falls he’s taken off the side of the road into the snow.] If he tries to Wright Stuff me, I will Black Magic the fuck out of him. [She opened the rear door of the truck as Roger got closer.] Roger, get in the truck.
I can’t. [He told her as he walked past her and the truck.] I’ve got to get to VooDoo’s house.
[VooDoo stood there for a moment and looked inside the truck where both the guards were looking the other direction trying to conceal their laughter. That confirmed all she needed to know, Roger had actually said it.]
For fuck’s sake. [VooDoo whirled around and stormed after Roger and grabbed him by the arm. When he came around, his fist was clenched and ready to swing; VooDoo dropped down and caught him with a leg sweep that dropped him on his back in the muddy snow. She rubbed her brow for a moment frustrated as she watched as Roger struggled and barely made it to his knees.] Dear Lord. [She walks over to him and puts her hand on his shoulder.] Roger.
VooDoo, thank god you're here. [He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her to him and tried to use her to climb to his feet. She scrunched up her nose and a look of disgust showed on her face.] It’s good to see a friendly face, some bitch just tripped me.
Jesus Christ, Roger, did you bath in a vat of Jack Daniels before you came here? [She pushes him away from her, hard. Hard enough to where he’s on his back in the muddy snow again and struggling around in the slush as she watched him, all she could think of she needed to get for fuck’s sake put on a t-shirt as her new motto.] ROGER!
VooDoo, I’ve been looking for you. [He rolled over and got to his knees and slowly got to his feet.]
So, I’ve heard. [She dryly said and placed both her hands on her hips and stands there for a moment.] Why are you here, Roger? I do not remember sending for you.
I had to come here and talk to you, in person. [He paused for a moment.] Marie…
[VooDoo silently waited for him to finish his statement but when he said nothing, she got frustrated.] Marie, what, damnit?!
Everyone’s been right. Shane was right, you were right, everyone has been right. I’m no good for Marie. [Roger’s eyes started to fill with tears.] I am the worst father ever. I am no good for her. She’s better off with you. [He bowed his head, closed his eyes and the tears fell.] She’d be better off if I was dead.
[...and then Roger Wright was laying on his back again. VooDoo having reached out and slapped him with what was the equivalent of being slapped by the right hand of God. There was a collective “oh shit” from Mike and Jimmy in the truck; both of them holding the side of their face that she had slapped on Roger as if even they had felt it. She looked back at the truck and thumbed in Roger’s direction; immediately the two guys got out of the truck. She walked over and squatted down next to Roger.]
You slapped me. [He was truly shocked.]
Yes, yes I did. And if I hear you utter those words again, they will be your last. [All three men looked at her, but her eyes never left Roger’s.] I said what I said. You are literally the only person that child has got since her mother signed her over to you like she was a fucking akc puppy. In less than a year I watched you go from a doting father who had the love and admiration of his daughter… to this… [She looked at him with a look of disgust.] I don’t even know what this is. [She stood up and looked at the two men.] Get him in the back of the truck, I don’t want him stinking up the cab.
[The two men reached down and helped him up and helped him over to the back of the truck, as VooDoo lowered the tailgate; they rolled him in. VooDoo then closed the tailgate.]
You broke my rules, Roger. I have half a mind to give you what you wish. I have over 600 thousand acres of land and very loyal staff who wouldn’t question if I asked them to help me hide a dead body and stick to my sob story that you must have gotten drunk and got lost in the woods and died. [She paused for a moment.] Roger, do you know how many people get lost in the woods a year? [She didn't wait for an answer.] About 2,000 people get lost in the woods every year, 175 of them die; you would become a statistic. Everything left in your name transferred to a trust for Marie when she turns 18. Poor Marie growing up to learn that her mother that didn’t love her still lives and the father loved a bottle more than her and died a broken and fallen man, leaving her alone to be raised by a woman who a little over a year ago was a stranger. [She paused for a moment.] I am pretty sure that Shane will have the courts place Marie into my custody permanently, since he was smart enough to do it temporarily. And I guess you can take solace in knowing that I will raise her as if she was one of my own, but a lot of good that's going to FOR FUCKIN' MARIE. [She calmed herself down some and looked over at Mike.] Take us back to my house before I do kill him.
I’ll ride in the back to make sure he doesn’t fall out. [Jimmy slid up on the tailgate, with his legs hanging off.] I don’t think I’ve ever seen her that mad.
Me neither.
[Mike got in the cab with VooDoo and looked over at her.] Sure you don’t want us to take him back to the airport?
No, just take us back to the house. I’m gonna have to google detox and shit. How long it takes you to stop wanting alcohol; I don't know, something. [She sighed; feeling a little defeated.] Cause this right here isn’t working.
It took me two weeks. [Mike’s voice came out softly.] When you all came to town, it was one of the things that you offered for us residents. It’s still a struggle sometimes, but I call my sponsor. I can give you his number if you’d like.
I would, Mike, text it to me. [She gave him a warm smile; it felt good knowing that the Wolf family was able to help him and others; especially this way.] Thank you for sharing.
Yes, Ma’am. [He pulled the truck in front of her house and they got out. She walked up to the front porch and took off her tennis shoes as Mike and Jimmy helped Roger up the steps.] You want us…
To help take his boots off and give him a shove inside so no one tracks mud on the floor, sure. [VooDoo went inside to start a pot of coffee.]
Yes, Ma’am.
[Both the men said and did just that; they stripped him of his boots and his suit jacket and just as VooDoo walked back down the hall to the front door, they were throwing him in the foyer in a pile.]
Breakfast on me, too, guys.
Yes, Ma’am.
Thank you, Ma’am.
[The two men closed the door as Roger slowly got to his feet; holding the wall. VooDoo stood there for a moment and just looked at him with that disapproving tone on her face. Yes, if there was ever a woman who you can hear the tone of her look, it was her.]
Kitchen, Roger, now. We need to talk.
[By the time Roger made it into the kitchen, VooDoo was sitting already placing two cups of coffee on the table; she took a seat in one of the chairs and motioned for him to have a seat. She watched as he took a drink of his coffee.]
I really don’t know where to start, Roger. I bring your child into my home so that way she doesn’t have to see you wallow in the bottom of a bottle. And what do you do?
I’m sorry… I…
And you come down in the condition I didn’t want her to see you in. [She sighed and took a drink of her coffee.]
I just wanted to see her.
Like this? [She shook her head.] You know what, Roger, I am going to be perfectly frank with you; your daughter needs you, you need to get your life fucking together. So, I am going to need you to cowboy the fuck up or whatever it is you all do down there in fucking in Texas; if not for yourself, but for Marie.
[He started to say something but didn’t. He reached for the cup of coffee, flexing his fingers as his hands shook.]
What’s wrong, Roger?
I’m cold. I can’t feel my hands. Jeez, I can’t feel my body. [His whole body started to visibly shake.] I… feel... numb.
[VooDoo got up and walked around to his side of the table and touched his forehead, he was ice cold.] Jesus Christ, Roger. We need to get you in a shower. It's 21 degrees out, what possessed you not to wear a jacket at least?
[Roger tried a couple of times to get up and couldn’t.] I can’t. I can’t feel my legs.
Come on, Roger. [She walked over and grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into a standing position; wrapping one of his arms around her shoulders and the other around his waist.] Hot shower will get you warmed up, there’s got to be some clothes in Marie’s closet that you left here. Once you’re showered then we’ll get back to talking.
[They made it slowly through the rest of the house and VooDoo took him to her room; no way they were making it to the upstairs bathroom. She flipped on the light and walked him over to the bathroom door and leaned him up against it. She went inside and turned on the shower.]
Get those clothes off, towels are in the closet. [She started out of the room but as she went to pass him, she saw that he was having trouble with the buttons on his shirt. She groaned and sighed.] Damn it, Roger.
Sorry, Voo. [He mumbled, sounding every bit a broken man that she called him earlier. He quietly watched her reach over and started unbuttoning his shirt; the heat of embarrassment rising to his cheeks. Ice began to fall on the floor.]
Shower, Roger, clothes and all.
[Roger pushed off the door and took a step towards the shower and almost fell; if it hadn’t been for VooDoo grabbing him, he would have been face first on the floor. She walked him over to the shower and helped him into the stall and told him just to stand there for a moment. They listened as chunks of ice began to hit the tile and the water turned a light shade of brown.]
I’m really sorry. [He mumbled again.]
Will you stop saying that. [She told him as she reached in and began to unbutton the buttons of his shirt and help him out of it. She dropped the shirt in the bottom of the shower just as he started to sway again and grabbed the wall.]
I’m gonna... pass out...
Damn it, Roger. [VooDoo thought briefly about letting him pass out and hit the tile but decided against it; it just wasn’t worth having to help him back up nor the cracked skull from the tile. She stepped in and grabbed him, holding him steady; the water started to soak her clothes.] Just hold onto the wall.
[VooDoo unbuckled his belt and then the jeans; she shook her head, not believing that she was actually doing this.] Do not fall.
[She pushed his pants down over his hips and whoops, she didn’t expect that. Evidently the cold had no effect on his lower half; none whatsoever. She looked away and quickly looked away. She looked up at him, to find him just watching her. He had that look, the look of a man on the verge of leaning in and kissing you. She shook her head and mouth the word no, before sound came out of her mouth.]
Don’t. Even.
Fucking.
Think. It.
[The scene fades back in and it’s the next next morning, Roger slowly opens his eyes and lays there and tries to think of where “there” was. He was laying in a bed covered with a white sheet, his hand resting on a firm ass cheek. His eyes shot wide open and he turned his head to find a mass of red curls that framed the pale angelic face of VooDoo’s as she slept. One thought ran through his mind… What fuck did he fucking do? All he could do was think about apologizing.]
Oh, my God, I am so sorry, Voo. [He grabbed the sheet as he jumped out of the bed and started looking for his clothes. VooDoo turned over and sat up in bed, she had an amused smile on her face as he looked away from her naked form still looking for his clothes.] I didn’t.. I didn't..
You didn’t what? You didn’t mean to fuck me? [She asked nonchalantly as she got up and picked up a silk robe from the back of her vanity table chair; she was still smiling, she found this humorous.]
No, I didn’t mean to take advantage of you. I damned sure would have fucked you. [He groaned at his choice of words after they slipped out.]
You think that’s what happened? [She chuckled a little bit as she walked over to him and patted him on the cheek; he firmly held the sheet in place not wanting it to slip.] You really are too nice for your own good. If anything, Roger, I took advantage of you. It’s this thing I do with men who show up in my life. [She smiled a wicked little smile.] Trust me, when I say this… you meant to fuck me last night.
Wait… what?
You don’t remember a thing do you? [VooDoo smiled as he shook his head.] You were drunk, Roger, like tore up from the floor up drunk. I wasn’t; I was the one who was really in control of the situation last night; very very poor judgement on my part, I might add. [She looked down for a moment shook her head in a shameful manner that was downright comical and then looked back at him.] So, I absolve you of any guilt you might have.
[Roger smiled and relaxed a little.] So, you took advantage of me?
I tend to take advantage of certain situations when they arise, and a very large one arose last night. [She smirked and winked.] I can see why Ani was so enthralled by your "Wright Stuff".
I’d like to think it was more than my "Wright Stuff" that enthralled her.
Roger, it’s Ani we’re talking about. [She gave him the 'tell me I'm lying look'.
[He opened his mouth to say something and thought of her words; she was right, it was Ani.] So, where does that leave us?
That leaves us with me going in my bathroom to take a shower and you going upstairs to do the same before the kids show up. I don’t mean to hurt your feelings or anything like that when I say this, but we had sex last night. [She smirked a little.] Some very toe-curling sex that I am sorry you can’t remember. But we’re not boyfriend and girlfriend now, we’re not in a relationship. We’re friends, nothing more, nothing less.
I understand and I completely agree. [He nodded his head; he was a little on the relieved side actually; this could have been an awkward situation; he didn’t want to screw anything up for Marie.] Last thing we want to do is give the kids… hell, really everyone, the wrong impression.
Exactly. Now, go get, before the kids show up. [She headed in the direction of the bathroom.] And bring my sheet back.
I don’t think it’s fair that I can’t remember what happened. [He joked. When VooDoo got in the bathroom she turned around, with one hand on the doorknob.]
Guess that’ll teach ya not to drink. [She smirked as she shut the bathroom door behind her.]
[Touche’, Roger thought as he made his way over to the bedroom door and listened for the tell-tale signs of children before he opened it, the last thing he needed to explain to any of the kids; hers and his, too, why he was coming from her room naked wrapped in a sheet. Hearing none, he slipped out the door and made his way upstairs as the scene faded to black.]
