Pulling on the reins, Roger brought the horse to a stop. Slowly Roger dismounted and moved to a large stone at the edge of the mesa. From here he could see the whole ranch, everything he had built sprawling out before him, and with the sun behind him, it was lit up beautifully. At the furthest extent of his vision he could see the farmhouse he had lived in all his life, his daughter playing in the field just below it. Anicka in the kitchen finishing up packing the last of the essentials, she had been ecstatic about Roger joining them in parts unknown.
Shane was upset, but then Roger gave him half the company, and things did change. Shane now had the ranch house to live in, better than the dump he had been living in, of course Shane being the penny pincher he was, never would have moved if this offer hadn’t come up. But Roger knew he would come around, grow to understand the situation and what it represented.
Roger put his right foot up on the stone, took off his brown cowboy hat and placed it up on his knee, there was never a more free and relaxing moment then when he came up here. But like all things in this life, things change. There was a time when he was the best in the ring, when he owned what went on in that ring. Now Roger owns that ring, and this week he steps back into it, a thought that only brought a smile to his face.
Things change, but they always seem to stay the same in a way. For the longest time this ranch was my life, never saw myself anywhere else but here. Then came change, something wandered into my life, something I now know I want to be with no matter where it is. That’s life though isn’t it, things just continue to change, we adapt and we grow. Well some of us, others of us just stay stuck in a rut.
Yeah I am talking about Johnny and his desire to just get into the ring and be the headliner, so desperate for it he had to buy a wrestling company. Now don’t get all but hurt Johnny, we all know that you are who you are, and well you are never going to change. From the moment I met you I knew who you were, understood you better than you probably understood yourself, but even I knowing what I knew didn’t just want to accept that reality.
While we all grow up and we all figure out ways to become better, to change and make something of ourselves, you are stuck living in the past worrying about how many times people say your name. You are out there searching for the thank you’s, listening for the crowd to pop when your music begins to play, holding on the light as long as you can, because deep down inside you know without those fans, without that adulation, you are nothing.
It’s the very essence of who you are Johnny, you have never known family, but you have always wanted it, always sought it from the beginning of time. It is the reason you have been the leader of every failed stable in the history of wrestling. Ok maybe not every single one, but every one you have been the leader of has failed. It’s not a great mystery, or some magic thing that happens by chance, a five year can see it coming every time.
It goes like this, Johnny joins a wrestling organization, and immediately begins building a stable of wrestlers to align himself with so that he can push himself to the top. Said wrestlers get tired of the bullshit that Johnny spews at them, mostly because they learn how full of shit he is, then leave. Johnny is left out in the cold holding his dick, while everyone else that he tried to bring down succeeds where he couldn’t. Sounds pretty damn familiar doesn’t it Johnny?
The real irony of the whole thing though, the thing that eats at you at this very moment is...That I have what you want, I have what you have been trying to create since you started in this business. Compounding that anger is the fact I did it with the people that you have wanted to do it with since day one. Think about that, Roger, the guy that pretty much always went it alone, is part of the family that you always wanted, has everything you always desired, and once more is the man that you wish you could be.
Now before you get all mad and have a round of four year old word vomit, let me explain. See Johnny when you have to force something to happen, it never works out right, in fact it tends to fall apart, I learned that lesson with your wife. No that isn’t me talking down about her, it’s just me showing how I grew and changed from the experiences that I had. Something you to this day have still not done Johnny.
But then how could anyone expect you to change. It’s just not in your nature, it would require you to do something so crazy, so profound, that it would literally destroy your own mind just to consider it. So you will do what you have always done, you will fail, fail to have the family you want, fail to reach the level that you want, and ultimately Johnny you will just fail to be the man that you want to be, ME!
Roger lifted the hat, flipped it onto his head and turned to mount his horse. With a flick of the reigns Roger pushed the horse to turn and down the mesa they were heading. Roger pulled the horse to a stop at an old tree, weathered by time. He dismounted and approached the tree, his outstretched hand finding an old scar on it, running the length of the trunk.
This tree, 20 years ago was struck by lightning, and yet it didn’t die. Sure it looks like death, but in a way it has become something else, slowly changed over time. See even the trees in the world change with time Johnny, they don’t just stand there defiantly screaming at the world praying that someone can make sense of the nonsense they are spewing. No they change, they age, they become something more than they were meant to be when they can.
Think about that, while you are smoking that plant you rolled up, this tree has a better ability to adapt and change than you do Johnny. It is able to grow, and overcome the limitation that the world gives it. Maybe one day you can be as strong, as powerful, as great as this tree. But then we both know that won’t happen, because you would try and roll up your leaves and smoke them. I guess some things never change huh?
Thankfully though Johnny, you don’t have to only get into the ring with me, you have to get into the ring with Vin, and well that probably just boils that blood of yours even more. The man that you wanted to be before me, is now teaming with me. When you get into that ring, when you look across it, you are going to see the two men that you want to be, it will be like looking into a dream that you could never create. I want to tell you that I am sorry, but alas I am not Johnny.
I am not sorry because you have created the bed that you now lie in. You worked so hard to try and artificially become something that you are not, that you have to live with the fact that you created it for someone else. Think about that, you in essence created me, you didn’t mean to, but if it wasn’t for you, there pretty much wouldn’t be a me, and now I have everything that you ever wanted. Including half of your company.
Maybe next time you can get it right, but then we both know that won’t happen, that would require you to change, to develop and become something different than what you are. We all know you can’t do it, hell I have shown the world that you can’t, and thus we will all be stuck with the sick ramblings of a grown ass man that sounds like a 6 year old who is lost and confused in the grocery store.
Roger climbed back onto the horse and nudged it back on it’s way. He rounded a small bend and then into a field set the horse to full gallop across the field. He slowed the horse as it reached the coral, and waved to Marie who lit up with excitement at his arrival. She egged her horse on to pull up along side Roger.
“Hey daddy, have a good ride?”
“I sure did Peanut, got to think about a lot of things.” He stoically replied.
“Like us moving?”
“Yes, like us moving. Are you still excited?” He asked.
“Get to see Ani everyday, and all the other kids, and still have horses. So I think it’s perfect daddy.” Marie lit up as she said all those things.
“Good peanut.” Roger rubbed her head and messed up her hair, as the two rode into the barn side by side. That had been Roger’s greatest worry, how would Marie handle leaving the ranch, but now he didn’t have to worry about that, she was more excited than he was, and for the first time in his life, all the things seemed to be lining up just right. Cue the disaster!!!!
